Who Can Apply for the GAIN 2026 Program?

The GAIN 2026 program is open to students from all African countries. In particular, GAIN strongly encourages applications from top-performing students who meet the following criteria:

• Final-year students or recent graduates of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
• Field of study must be economics or a related discipline
• Intention to pursue a PhD in economics or related fields, or a Master’s degree as a pathway to a PhD
• Willingness to study abroad
• Ability to commit 3–5 hours per week from January onwards

The GAIN Webinar Program (Mandatory First Phase)

Once accepted, participants begin with the GAIN Webinar Program, which runs biweekly on Zoom from January to June. Importantly, participation in this webinar series is mandatory for anyone who wishes to advance to the mentoring stage.

During the webinars, guest speakers—many of whom are leading African scholars—cover critical topics. For example:

• Scholarships and funding opportunities
• GRE and TOEFL strategies
• Writing an academic CV and Statement of Purpose
• Choosing universities and research fields
• Securing strong letters of recommendation
• Balancing family life with graduate studies

Consequently, participants gain a comprehensive understanding of the graduate application process.

The GAIN Mentoring Program

Towards the end of the webinar phase, participants may apply for the mentoring program, which is the second stage of the GAIN 2026 program. However, only promising candidates are selected.

At this stage, participants must:

• Complete the webinar program
• Take a mock GRE
• Submit a CV, Statement of Purpose, and academic transcript

Once accepted, each mentee is matched with an experienced mentor. Furthermore, mentors meet with mentees every two weeks to guide them through school selection, application materials, and standardized test preparation.

In 2024 alone, about 75 students advanced to this mentoring phase, highlighting its competitiveness and value.

GRE Bootcamp and Progression

The mentoring phase begins with an intensive GRE summer bootcamp, which includes preparation materials and structured practice. By the end of summer, all mentoring participants must have taken the GRE.

Importantly, continuation in the mentoring program—and access to funding—depends on GRE performance. Therefore, commitment and consistency are essential.

Financial Support from GAIN

In addition to academic guidance, GAIN offers financial support to cover costs such as:

• Standardized test fees
• Application fees
• Test score submissions

Moreover, top GRE performers may qualify for Mentoring+, which provides a larger budget and more hands-on support. As a result, financial constraints are significantly reduced for high-performing students.

GAIN Alumni Support

Finally, once participants gain admission to graduate school, they can join the GAIN Alumni Network. Through this network, alumni receive monthly check-ins, targeted webinars, and continued guidance.
